Stansted Mountfitchet
The name Stansted immediately conjures the image of Stansted airport into the listeners mind, but little do they know about the nice village of Stansted Mountfitchet just two miles away from the airport.
Stansted was a Saxon settlement and means stony place in Saxon. It inherited the suffix Mountfitchet from the Norman baron who settled there after the Norman invasion of England. A Norman castle has been reconstructed around the remains of the original castle of Mountfitchet.
Stansted Hall built in 1871 proudly stands in the village.
Next to the castle is the House on the Hill Toy Museum claimed by its owners to be the largest toy museum in Europe with over 80000 toys from the 50’s to the 80’s.
The village has a working windmill built in 1787 and is open to public view once a month.
Stansted airport originally was a US Air force airfield built during the Second World War subsequently taken over by the government and developed as a commercial airport.
Today London Stansted is Britain’s third busiest airport, serving 22.8 million passengers a year. Many leading low-cost scheduled airlines have made Stansted their base.
The airport offers flights to over 162 destinations by some 29 airlines. The airport has a shopping section that fulfills your every need from duty free to travel necessities. Stansted’s cafés, restaurants and bars offer a world of choice from hot breakfasts to light lunches, classic pub meals to specialty seafood.
There are a number of hotels both luxury and budget around the airport to suit every requirement.
